Hi Cabrera's...it's Kate.
Let's see quick update on Mama and Papa, and then I'll tell you all about the prom!!! Mama had a hard weekend, Tish received a phone call on Saturday saying that Mama was in a rage and was biting, kicking, scratching, and screaming. They were waiting for approval for an injectable sedatitive. She has become combative with the staff on several occasions...sometimes about taking her medication, sometimes about seemingly nothing at all. Most of me is sad about this...but I have to say that part of me is proud of Mama for still having a fighting spirit. I feel like she is battling so many things right now...and how frustrating it all must be. So, while I don't want her to hurt herself or others, I'm glad that her spirit is still willful. Does that seem crazy?
Well then, I saw Mama on Sunday. She was in bed and mostly unresponsive. She only opened one eye. I noticed that her right side seemed somewhat weak, her hand and arm are limp, she had trouble drinking water...using only half of her mouth. Margaret has asked for Dr. Harris to see her on Thursday when he does his rounds. Mama didn't really respond much to me, she smiled when I told her I loved her, and I stroked her face and hair. She cried a bit on and off. I always let her cry...it seems like she needs the release of emotion. Who knows what is the right thing to do??? After staying for about a half hour, I left as she dozed. She waved to me when I left, I blew her a kiss and she smiled again.
I also saw Papa on Sunday. He was in a sound sleep, and did not wake up as I kissed him. I sat with him for a few minutes and then left, telling him I loved him. He never woke up, or responded...I felt his sleep was more important than my visit.
I heard from Liti about a visit she had with Mama and Papa on Sunday. She said Mama was very weepy and was begging them not to leave her. This must have been incredibly hard. She said Papa had labored breathing, but did not want the oxygen when she offered it. She said Papa was weak and the visit didn't last long.
I went back today (Tuesday morning). I heard from Margaret that Papa had seen Mama yesterday for an hour. I saw Papa first today. When I arrived he was standing in his room, looking quite unsteady. He had his oxygen tubes in, and was attached to the tank as he was walking toward the bathroom. The cord stretches plenty, but I was afraid he was going to trip and fall as the cord was getting caught on the walker. After using the restroom, he wanted to go back to bed, but was disoriented where the bed was. I helped him get to bed, and asked him if he wanted a drink. It took some time for the words to form, but "root beer" finally came out. He drank well with a straw. And then he went to sleep. I sat for awhile and told him I loved him...trying so hard to only send out positive calm energy. I was willing my tears and sadness not to come through...Hopefully he felt the good stuff. He was weak, but seemed glad to have seen me. I was glad I went. I told him that all of his kids love him so much, even the ones that can't come see him a lot. He smiled and said "okay". That's pretty much the only word I get out of him these days.
I asked the front desk worker, Jane, to make sure the staff knows to check in on Papa while he is in his room. I am fearful he will fall. She said he is a favorite there, and that many of the staff check in on him as they walk by.
I wish I had some happy news to report about Mama and Papa. I encourage everyone to share their experiences with them...it's hard to remember what everyone has told me, and I often miscommunicate things...so please share...all news...fun and trivial, or sad and serious...or even in between is good.
I haven't heard any word on John and Amber and the newest little Cabrera. Will keep you posted if you I do. Please remember to read the old comments, I know that Jessica commented on the last blog just yesterday. And Jenny, if you read this...there have been at least two questions about Drake in the comment section. Any word on how he is doing?
Liti and Bob closed on both places, and the movers will come Weds. The movers will just move everything to the new place, and then Saturday is the day for real organization. I plan on going over Saturday at 10am to help set up, organize. I think that Mary was also going to help decorate? If anyone else is available, please call to let me know you want to volunteer. (792-3809) I can get you address and details. Bob and Lita hope to use Saturday as the day to get furniture where they want it, and really set-up house. I'm sure Bob could use at least one more set of strong muscles. Lita was hoping that Jason would come help also...don't know if that panned out or not.
Lastly, the prom...let's see I'm almost out of time now...so I'll be short. Saturday morning the whole family went to help do set-up. The Prom was at Promo West Lifestyle Pavilion. The theme was Mardi Gras...and Junior Student Council was responsible for all decorations. The kids have worked so hard on this, and it was incredible. I couldn't believe the details that they all thought of...Handmade street signs, vibrant colors, jester hats, plants, street lights, it was unbelievable! After working with one mom for about twenty minutes (we'd introduced ourselves by first names)...she asked me who's mom I was...and when I told her, she laughed and said her son was going to the prom with Megan. It was an incredibly fun day to see Megan in her element...having so much fun with her buds, and working really hard to make the it all come together. And when we left, she came home to get ready. Pictures were taken at a golf course...32 kids were in her group...and Jena and Nicole loved seeing all the beautiful dresses.
Megan's date was not only very nice...he was so cute!!! (I'm sure she's rolling her eyes if she's reading this) They were, by far, the best looking couple in the group...(there go the eyes again). Megan's dress was a full length, red dress with a very simple, elegant design. I promise to post pictures as soon as I can get Megan and the computer to cooperate. She wore her hair half up...and the long part curled. Poofed on top just a bit. Her shoes and purse were glittery silver, which matched the beaded accessory on the dress. She was GORGEOUS! I felt very happy for her to be a part of something so fun, and I was so happy that I could share the day with her.
After picture taking...the kids all left for dinner and the prom...and I have only gotten to hear little snippets of information about the prom itself. But everything I hear from kids and parents, and staff is that this was the best prom ever! It felt good to have something so trivially happy in my life, and it was a very good day. I can't believe that my girls are growing up so much!
I think that is all for now. Please share all of your news.
Love,
Kate

Message from Dawn @ Hospice
Note from Tish, Thursday, 3:30 p.m.
Dawn just called from The Forum. She was alarmed @ how exhausted Papa was. He could barely open his eyes for her and could not really sit up or respond to her questions. She said he was just plain exhausted. She asked the Forum staff if that was how he seemed typically and they indicated yes. Based on this, Dawn is recommending that Papa's visits to Mama be limited to 3 x week and 1 hour per visit. If Papa is having a really good day and indicates that he wants to see Mama (on a non-scheduled day) Forum will take him to see her. Dawn hopes that this reduced schedule will help boost Papa's energy level. I agreed to this. Hope everyone is OK w/ this, but if it's best for Papa...
They did mention to Mama that Papa would not be coming and indicated that Mama was having a day where she did not seem to know who Papa was.
On the brighter side, Dawn mentioned that Papa's Edema is much better. He only has a little bit under his eye and his hand is not as swollen. So the Lasix is doing a good job.
Love to you all, T.

Tuesday: Minor News From Forum Re Pops
Hi from Tish 4/23/08 2:15 p.m.
Hi everyone. Got a call from Forum yesterday. They have a visiting podiatrist and wanted approval for Papa to receive a visit from their podiatrist. Would be a monthly visit for minor care such as toenail trimming and general care of feet. I gave approval, but then learned later that the podiatrist was not a participating provider in Mama & Papa's HMO. Therefore, Rich is looking into the insurance issue to see who is on the participating podiatrist list. Rich, based on convenience factor, it may be good idea to go ahead & use the Forum's podiatrist. Not sure what the penalty would be for using a non-participating physician, but I thought I would throw that out there for consideration. I just think that (going forward) getting Mama & Papa to outside doctors' appointments is going to be challenging at best.
Kate, I'll have to touch base w/ you to see how you did w/ the prom dress search.
Also, was talking to Liti about trying to get together for dinner one night during the week. Know how tough it is for all, but would love to do this w/ those who can join us for dinner. Maybe we should try for this once Liti & Bob have their move under their belts and J & A's baby arrives.
Well, just wanted to keep you all up to date. Hope all is well w/ all of you.
Love, T.

Weekend Update
Hi...this is Kate.
Fran was in for the weekend, and she, Mary and Tish went to see Mama and Papa. The update that I got from Fran sounded like Mama and Papa were holding their own, but not great. Papa was not swollen, but was very weak and very tired. He could not go see Mama but wanted to visit with her, so they brought Mama to Papa. Mama was not very responsive and I understand the visit was sad for all.
Mary and Fran were able to go buy Mama some clothes...they had hoped to take her out to do this with them, but that just wasn't workable. They also were able to bring Papa some food from Bravo, which he seemed to really like. (Again, he wasn't interested in going with them, but enjoyed the food they brought to him).
The sisters all met for breakfast at Bob Evans on Saturday, and that was very enjoyable...maybe next time the brothers can join us? You know that we talk about whoever doesn't show up ?!?! That is the rule :):):)
I will visit Mama and Papa tomorrow and will update from my perspective. Fran was quite down after her visit and felt that Papa was really fading. Mama is struggling quite a bit with eating now...and really requires much help during mealtime. If you visit her, please make sure to offer her a drink of water, I don't think she is getting enough liquids, and this has also been a concern of Margaret's.
The pictures are great Jason...My favorites are the ones from the 80's with the big hairdos...We were styling! Hoping to hear news from John and Amber soon about little Hugo (if that is still the name they choose). And Liti and Bob should be closing this week on both houses...keep them in your prayers that all goes uneventfully! We will be looking for volunteers to help organize the new house on Saturday May 3, and I'm sure they could probably use help Sunday, May 4 as well. Movers will be doing the big move, but they will need assistance moving furniture to the right places and decorating, and setting up. (Debbie this organizing sounds right up your alley :) Speaking of that...Debbie is your website up and going for Clutterbye? Please post it when it is, so we can all check it out.
I think that is all for now...I'm off to run my girls to all of their activities for the next two hours and then Megan and I are heading to Polaris to make one last ditch effort to find a reasonably cheap prom dress...PRAY FOR US!!!
Love to all...

TGIF
Note from Tish, 12:15 p.m. Friday: John, my thoughts are w/ you & Amber. We can hardly wait to see the new arrival. I just hope the labor and delivery go well. Am looking forward to seeing those who can meet for breakfast tomorrow a.m. Fran, it will be good to see you. It's been too long.
Did occur to me...I told Jeami to start saving her pennies so that she could afford flight home. You know just in case. Let's discuss this tomorrow a.m during breakfast. No way are you shouldering this financial burden yourself, Fran.
Will see everyone tomorrow. Love, T.

Thursday night
Hi to all,
I just spend 40 minutes writing an update in the comments section of Tish blog...and then I hit the wrong button and lost the whole thing...UGGH! I hate computers sometimes. I had a visit with Mama and Papa today that was not great, but not horrible. They were both extremely tired and not really interested in visiting.
I will definitely be there on Saturday morning for breakfast. I made sure Lita heard about is as well. She said she and Bob would come by too...Bob probably won't stay long, but I told her that we would find her a ride home so she could stay. I'll update more tomorrow...I don't have it in me to re-write everything again.
Hope all is well with everyone. I so enjoy reading all of the comments, I hope everyone keeps it up. The fun stories and updates are the best. Please keep them coming. I want to hear about everyone...not just Mama and Papa.
Will write more tomorrow and hope to see some of you Saturday morning.
Love to all,
Kate

Closing in on Weekend
Note from Tish 4/17/08, 11:50 a.m.: Update on Mama & Papa. Visited both yesterday afternoon. Papa spent afternoon w/ Mama & was just returning to his apartment when I arrived. Mama was very fatigued and took a nap shortly after I arrived. Visited w/ Papa across the street and found him to be in good spirits. He was watching the "Ellen DeGeneres Show" and even laughed at some of the dumb jokes. His face is not as puffy, and I thought his breathing, although still labored, was not as bad as before. He even joked about that..."What did I do in my life to deserve this..." It sounds sad, but we both laughed about it. I talked to the LPN about Papa's Megace. Freidenberg had ordered discontinuation of the drug. We had some concerns which I believe were voiced to hospice and hospice must have talked to Dr. Harris. Harris has ordered that Megace be continued.
Mama's window is repaired. Mags, thanks for everything you did regarding this. Good work.
Kate cannot do dinner on Sat, so how does breakfast at Bob Evans sound to everyone? Kate & I were thinking about the B. Evans in Dublin near 161, 9:00. Sound good? Mags, Mary, Fran, Liti, any of the boys?
Talk to you all soon. Love, T.
p.s. I did email Jeami w/ latest news since I was not sure she was reading blog.

It's Tuesday
Hi from Tish (4/15/08 12:00 p.m.): I have not heard from the Forum yet about Papa's Megace or the use of Ensure. If I don't hear in next couple of hours, I will contact them to inquire about hospice's input on this. Could be (re. meds) that Freidenberg feels it's time to wean Papa off his medications (other than those that are intended to make him comfortable, etc during this time). In any case, if I hear anything, I will post it.
Re this weekend, since Fran's going to be home, was wondering if anyone had any interest in trying to get together for dinner on Saturday. Know it's hard with family etc obligations, but thought it would be nice.
Love, T.

Better Day on Sunday
Hi to all...This is Kate.
Please make sure you read through all the below posts and comments. Jason has added some old family pictures, as well as pics of Lita and Bob's new condo... and Tish, Fran, and Margaret have all added their own info under comments. Lots of good info.
Let's see...Friday, I wrote that the nurse from hospice had called with an update. Papa does now receive oxygen to help him breathe eaiser. That will explain the tank in his room if you visit. The increased Lasix that was ordered on Friday seems to have begun lessening his swelling.
We went for a visit on Sunday and had a good visit with both Mom and Pops. We saw Papa first. Lita and Bob were there already with Josie. Papa was sitting up in his chair and was very alert. His face was much less swollen than the last time I had seen him, and his hand was also much less swollen. My biggest relief was to see how alert he was. He was interested in hearing our conversation and was very interested in Josie. He wanted to pet her and kiss her. It was very sweet. He laughed at some of the things we said, and overall it was a much better visit than I have had with him in a long time.
He walked down to the dining room with his walker, and said he felt "pretty good". When we left him to go visit Mama, he said to tell her he loved her. I told him that we would try to get her over to see him today if he wanted...and he said yes definitely. I will work on that with Sandy, director of Mama's place.
Next we went to see Mama. She was having a confused day, but a sweet day. She was out in the main room with the other residents, visiting with Lita and Bob. There was a resident that was trying to get in her personal space...and she told him to "go away!" very emphatically and then moved herself away. It was like watching two toddlers trying to interact. I was happy to see Mama use her spunk to stand up for herself. She ate a good dinner with my assistance. And then when I suggested going to her room, she told me she didn't have a room anymore. When I walked her to her room, and opened the door, she was amazed. I showed her where her name was, she likes to read 2-3 word phrases...she is always proud of her accomplishment when she does this. She also asked me where her clothes were...could she get them back? When I opened her closet for her, again, she was amazed. Like I said she was confused but sweet.
We visited with her for about an hour. She loves to hear that we love her, and always responds very sweetly. After awhile she was beginning to fall asleep so, I left her laying down in her bed.
The nurse aide told me she would go in shortly and get Mama ready for bed. I witnessed many very kind interactions from the staff to the other residents while I was there. The nurse was wonderful, and did check on Mama's window repair for me. It should be taken care of by tomorrow morning at the latest.
Lastly, some of you have heard the fun news from the Albers...Jena tried out on Saturday morning for Dublin Idol...(similar to American Idol). She sang "Somewhere over the Rainbow".
She was in a group of 7-12 graders, so she was one of the youngest ones trying out...and she made the Top 10!!! We found out Saturday afternoon and the competition was Saturday evening...so not a lot of time to call all the in-towners to come watch...but it was quite an event. She sang beautifully and the pride I felt was beyond words. She didn't make it to the top 3...it was by audience vote. But, let me tell you, if it was based on true talent...she would have come in 2nd or 3rd for sure. She was wonderful. She loves performing, and comes alive on stage. Imagine her beautiful big blue eyes, with those long eyelashes, and then you add her incredible smile, comfortable stage presence and such a sweet voice. It was amazingly fun to see my child do something so far from my own comfort zone. What was even more amazing is how much she loved it! Performing is definitely her passion, so watch the blog for more Jena Albers updates...I'm sure you'll be hearing from her soon.
I will not be visiting Mama or Papa today and maybe not tomorrow...so if anyone else does, please update!
Love to all.

Old Family Pictures
April 2008
Hey Guys,
I recently found a bunch of old photo albums, that somehow ended up on my bookshelf. Some old photo albums that I had collected or been given to me, from my parents. Lots of kids pictures, lots of 70s pictures, etc.
I got very nostalgic, looking at em. I tried to think of a good way to share them with everyone. I wanted to offer everyone the opportunity to see them! It has been very cool for me, to see everyone in my families, in a different light! (Seeing grandparents as parents, aunts and uncles as kids, parents as young adults, etc). I also wanted to offer everyone the opportunity to have the originals, if they want em. I set out to scan them all into my computers, to have digital copies of them, in case something were ever to happen to the originals (lost during a move, etc) Very OCD of me, I know.
So, since most of the family is spread out across the states, I figured posting em on-line would work. Not as personal of a thing, but still fun. The link is below. Just click it. And if you want any of the originals of you or your family, please just let me know! If the quantity leans heavy of Jason & Noelita & Keith pictures, I'm sure you'll be sure to razz me for it at the next family function.
I thought it would be nice to make some sort of collage with em, for the next family get-together or something, or email them to each individual. And then I realized what a HUGE project it is, even trying to organize them all, and scan each page into the computer, etc. It took hours and hours and weeks of work. With how much I work every week and "life" stuff, I simply did not have the time at all to invest as much as I'd like into this project. I have about 4-5 more photo albums to scan, so I may be posting updates of new pictures in the next few weeks, depending on if I have time to keep working on it.
So, I hope this will suffice! And I hope you guys have fun seeing these old pictures. MAYBE IT WILL BRING BACK SOME GOOD MEMORIES AND MAKE YOU SMILE! That was really my intention! I BELIEVE you can print them also, from photobucket.com. Or right click the file, and "Save As" onto your computer, then print, or do what you like with them! For the older people in the family that don't use computers much, I would appreciate it if we could still show them somehow. Please feel free to show them the pictures via your laptop or prints!

What a rollercoaster ride!
By now, I think most of you have heard that Mama is not at the critical stage we all thought she was. On Wednesday night, the discussion was about feeding tubes and palliative care. By the time Margaret and I arrived on Thursday, she was able to swallow, both soft food and liquids. The doctor called it miraculous...I beieve that there was confusion on her diagnosis due to what they referred to as Mama being septic due to the urinary tract infection. My understanding is that when you become septic...your body begins to shut down...one of those symptoms was her inability to swallow. If that had been due to her dementia, it would have been irreversible. Since it was more likely due to the sepsis...it was reversible once she got on antibiotics.
John was the first to arrive at the hospital. Shortly before he got there, Mama had become extremely agitated, she climbed out of her bed, pulling her IV out, and when the nurses tried to restrain her themselves, there was quite an incident with her scratching and biting the nurses. Because she would not stay in the bed, and kept trying to wander the hallways, they restrained her in the bed. When John got there, he was able to calm her down (they were trying to get a med order for something to calm her, but once family members began coming...this was calming enough for her, and she did not need the meds).
When Margaret and I got there, Mama was incredibly lucid for a short period of time, asking Margaret if she had found a job yet. And asking Amber if the baby had come yet. Then she had her weepy period of time. Once they gave her meds, she became very sleepy and this is how she was when I left her.
The psychiatric doctor came and examined Mama and discussed her history with us. She felt the meds Mama were on for bi-polar and dementia were a pretty good combination...but asked why she was no longer on Adavan (sp?). I told her that I thought Dr. Friedenberg had recommended a new drug in replacement that would be a patch...but I wasn't sure if that had begun. I believed the Adavan was not long-acting enough, and they were trying something that would be more of a continuous effect. She wrote an order while Mama was in the hospital for Haldol as needed either orally or by injection if Mama became to agitated.
The doctor thought Mama would be released as early as today (Friday). Will keep you all posted if that is the case. She will go back to the Forum Memory Care Facility.
Now about Papa...Several of us met with the hospice provider, Harbor Lights. This is the hospice provider that Dr. Harris is affiliated with. They were wonderful. Papa does qualify for hospice, and MediCare pays for this service completely. They do believe his swelling is due to edema from end stage kidney failure. The swelling will continue to get worse as the days go on. They will begin seeing him just about every day. There is a whole team that will work with. 3 days a week it will be a nurse's aide. Then there is a chaplain, a social worker, and a nurse that will be there on the other days. Today they are getting him a new bed that rises, and lowers for them to provide easier more comfortable care. It also makes it so he can rise his head or feet (similar to a hospital bed).
Tish took very extensive notes...so I will let her comment more in depth. I have asked to be the contact person for hospice. They have said that they cannot predict at this point how long Papa has...but that once the edema begins, it usually isn't a long time....but again they did not want to be pinned down to a certain amount of time. When they feel his death is imminent they will contact me. I will then begin a phone chain amongst the siblings. I don't want to be making 9 phone calls at that point. I will call Margaret, ask Margaret to call Paul...and on up the line. If you can't get through to the person above you, please leave a message and contact the next person. Does this sound acceptable?
Hospice will work on his comfort and quality of life. His dignity is of utmost concern for them, and I think this will help Papa tremendously. They will refer to themselves as from Harbor Lights, and will not say they are from hospice. They are here to serve the family as well. Any one of the siblings can call with a question anytime. There is a general phone number 1-888-227-6543. When you call that number, let them know who you are calling about, and they will get one of Papa's team to call you back. We have suggested a notebook to be left on Papa's dresser that we can write info, questions, etc. This will be for any one working with Papa and for any family members. It may take awhile to get people to use the notebook...But it could be a helpful tool, so we will try it.
I will receive a phone call twice a month automatically with updates. And anytime any major change happens, they will call immediately. I will post this info as I get it. I think that is about all the info I have for now.
I can't imagine a better group of people to be riding this ride with. I am learning so much about all of my siblings in the is process and am very grateful for what each one of you bring to the family, and to Mama and Papa.
Love,
Kate

Mama
A quick update, Mama is in the hospital today (Wednesday) after an episode yesterday. We are still waiting for a formal assessment from the doctor (Margaret is at the hospital right now with her).
The Forum called Tish Tuesday evening to tell her that they had found Mama on the floor of her room, face down in between the bed and wall. She was moaning, but otherwise unresponsive. She had them call the ambulance and send Mama to Riverside Hospital. In the emergency room last night they ran several tests to check for possible stroke, heart problem, or broken bones. All tests so far, have come back normal.
She is resting most of the time...dozing in and out. The nurse told Margaret that one of the meds Mama is on, often makes you very sleepy...maybe this is the new med that Mama just started? Mama is having difficulty swallowing, and has not been able to eat any food today. They have been giving her IV fluids. Difficulty swallowing is often a sign that the dementia has advanced to another level.
That's all I know at this point. I will let you know once we find out anymore. The meeting with hospice is definitely set for Thursday at 6pm at the Forum where Papa lives. Any siblings are welcome, but please don't feel a responsibility to be there. We will meet at the front desk and then go up to the third floor library (down the hall from Papa's old 3rd floor apartment).

Kate

Saturday, Sunday and Monday
Hi to all,
I will try to keep this short, but informative. Fran came in Friday night and we saw Mama and Papa on Saturday. Papa was not well. The aide told us he had eaten very little for breakfast and no lunch. He drank an Ensure while we there and said it was "so good". (we try to keep these stocked in his little frig...whenever you go visit, offer him one.) Margaret, Tish, and I have been buying them when we see the need. Fran bought several more for him while she was here. He mostly sat in his chair or layed in his bed while we visited. He told us he tries to sit up in his chair because it helps him concentrate. He wants to lay down most of the time now...but he loses awareness of what is going on, when he is laying down. His face is puffy and he looks more like Tio now. He wanted to see Mama but said he was not able to go over to visit...he is just too worn out, even to go in a wheelchair. We asked him if he was up to us bringing Mama to him...He nodded an emphatic "YES".
We then went over to see Mama. She was extremely agitated, crying and saying that she wanted "out of this place". She was offering anything she could if we would help her get out...her furniture, lamps, even her clothes. We summoned the nurse to see if she had had her Adavan for anxiety. We didn't want to take her over to see Papa in such an agitated state. The nurse said she had already taken it, but that she would check to see if she could give her some more. Once Mama got more medicine she became calmer, but then when we suggested going to see Papa...Mama said she was too scared to leave, and began weeping. This was quickly followed by her falling into a deep sleep. We managed to calm her down, alright, but then we were unable to get her over to see Papa. Papa was disappointed when we told him she couldn't come, but quickly went back to sleeping and we told him we would try again the next day.
Then came Sunday...We decided to go over earlier in the day, and got over to see Papa about 9:30. He seemed slightly more alert. He said yes, he would like it if Mama came over, so we tried again. When we got over to see Mama, they said she had had a "difficult" morning and had refused to take most of her meds. They had tried to crush them up and mix them in chocolate. She had chocolate on her hands and pants from trying to fight with them. They had gotten her to take her Adavan and by the time we got there, she was weepy, but relatively calm. She said, yes she would like to go see Papa.
We got a wheelchair and wheeled her across the street, it was a beautiful day outside. When we got to Papa's room, they were both so happy to see each other. They reached their hands out to each other and held hands...both of them shaking the whole time. Mama knew who Papa was, and had an incredibly sweet reaction to him. She kissed his hands and told him she loved him. They kissed. They sat on the couch for a few minutes holding hands, and then Papa had to lie down. She got up out of her wheelchair, stroked his cheek and told him she loved him. When it was time to take Mama back, they kissed, clasped hands, and Mama said..."I love you honey" and Papa said, "I love you too sweetheart" Words cannot express the sweetness of this moment. I'm not sure that they will have another moment like it...with Mama being aware and sweet, and Papa being able to respond. They both needed it and I am so glad that they had this time.
Monday update was that Papa was again very weak when Margaret visted him. She only stayed for a few minutes. He was finishing his dessert from lunch (only a bite or two) and then he asked her to help him lie down. She said he told her to "Tell your mother I love her", as she told him she was going to visit Mama.
Mama had an extreme agitated day again. She took her cane and broke out a window, yelling for "Freedom, freedom". It is heart wrenching to see her in so much anguish, and yet I find it somehow helpful to see the humor in the fact that she is paying us all back for being such hellyuns as teenagers :) They calmed her down with medication and Margaret made it over shortly after the incident occured. The staff is still very hopeful that they can work with her medications to get the right combination to get her to a better place mentally. They told Margaret this just takes time. I plan on calling to check on her later this afternoon.
Tish posted a comment about Lita and Bob...hopefully you got a chance to read it. They found a condo that they put a bid on. Read Tish's comment for more info.
Lastly, we have decided to go ahead and have hospice do an assessment on Papa. They were hopeful to do this sometime Monday afternoon or this morning (Tuesday). They said after that the next step is to meet with any immediate family members that want to...to hear about the assessment and to hear what services hospice can provide both for family members and for Papa. Now....they may come back and say that Papa is not yet ready for hospice...this would shock me, but it may be what happens. Regardless, they can inform us what services will be provided once hospice does begin. All siblings are welcome to be present at this meeting, but it is no way a requirement. Just please know you are welcome. I have been trying to get a confirmation on appointment time. I tentatively have it set up for Thursday at 6pm at the Forum, where Papa lives. I will post later when I get a confirmation of time and exact place.
That is all for now. Please post any of your experiences...even if they don't have anything to do with Mama and Papa. All family news is appreciated.
Love,
Kate

One more thing
Please make sure you scroll down to read any comments on previous entries...I know that Tish has commented on my entry from a few days ago.

A few things
Hi family,
I have just a few pieces of information to share...and I encourage anyone else that has thoughts, or news (good news is always welcome!)...to share by clicking on comments and then clicking on anonymous (if you don't have a Google account). It is very easy to do. Please understand that what I write is only my perspective, and my attempt to keep everyone up to speed. I welcome all additional information and updates from others.
Let's see...Fran is coming in for the weekend...she is going to try to come once a month for an extended weekend. She will drive on Fridays, stay on Saturdays and Sundays, and then head home on Mondays. She should be here sometime late afternoon today, and will stay at our house. She wants to see Mom and Pops, but I'm sure she would love to hear from anyone else as well.
I had a very sweet visit with Mama yesterday. She enjoyed hearing my funny memory stories about when I was a little girl, and I did get her to laugh a few times. She was a having a very "sweet" day. She continued to say that she doesn't like where she is living. I think the unfamiliarity of it all is upsetting...but she was much calmer yesterday and agrees when I say that they will help her "brain work better". She is currently on a medicine called Adavan (sp?) which helps her with her anxiety. The director at this facility, Sandy...assured me that it is normal to have a period of adjustment, and she felt that Mama would adjust just fine to her surroundings within a couple of more weeks.
Tish, John, Margaret and I met with the Papa's doctor yesterday. He had not seen Papa in about five weeks. The neurologist had ordered tests for Papa about a month ago and had been concerned about the tests that indicated possible kidney failure. This has been a concern for a few years now...but the neurologist had indicated concern, so we wanted to get Papa's main doctor (Dr. Harris)'s opinion. Papa has gone down hill dramatically in the last two months, and so we had lots of questions and wanted to gain a better understanding of the test results.
Dr. Harris was actually very reassuring. He wants to re-run some of the tests and he does feel Papa is in kidney failure...but he also said he felt that he could have months left. My fear was that it was much more imminent. I had discussed with the director of the Forum, Nancy, the possible need for hospice. She indicated on Tuesday, that she felt it was time to discuss this with Dr. Harris due to his rapid decline. Dr. Harris however, said that we just need to be prepared for more decline, but that he did not feel it was going to be in the next few weeks. He did not recommend hospice at this time. When it comes time for hospice, the workers will come to Papa where he is living...They will work with him medically and spiritually to help him as he gets worse. Nancy has said her goal, is that Papa could remain in the current building he is in, with hospice coming there to provide services. Dr. Harris, however, mentioned that we do need to be prepared for Papa to possibly have to go to the Health Care Center that the Forum has as he gets worse. We also asked that Dr. Harris see Papa every three weeks, and then if any of us feel the need in between, we can request an additional visit. Dr. Harris comes to the Forum every Thursday afternoon.
So again, please feel free to add your thoughts (or even questions). I spoke with John this morning...and he said he thinks the baby will come in the next few days...I can't wait for happy news!
That's all for now.
Love,
Kate

Love,
Kate

Last week update
Hi Cabrera's...
Lots of stuff happened while I was on vacation with my family...so here is a quick synopsis. Liti came home from Whetstone Care Center...and she sold her house! Yeah! They are now looking for a condo with a first floor master bedroom/bathroom...first floor plan. Hopefully we will have good news on that soon. Also...her wrist is healing, the swelling has gone down. The account that was set up to help Bob and Lita has had several donors...and this will help significantly as they learned that insurance will cover a wheelchair or her prosthesis, but not both.
Mama and Papa had another move. We moved Mama to the Memory Care unit which is in a different building and is specifically for dementia patients. It has gotten off to a bumpy start, she has some days that are better than others, but for the most part, she let's us all know that she is not happy in her new "home". I believe strongly though that this is the place for her though. She lives in the past a lot. Margaret has found success explaining that Papa is "at work" when Mama keeps asking where he is. She seems to like this answer, and it makes sense to her. She loves seeing familiar faces, and if you visit, please attempt to get her out of the room and into the larger sitting areas.
Papa was moved down the first floor apartment in Assisted Living (the one Mama previously had). His health has continued to go downhill. If you haven't had a chance to visit with him lately, please make every effort to go see him. The walk each day from the third floor was really taking a toll on him. He uses a walker now, and is needing a wheelchair more often. Today was an incredibly bad day for him...I know more about his medical condition on Thursday night, but it does appear that his kidneys are failing.
Margaret had a crappy job (really crappy), quit it (rightfully so...) and is now back to searching for a job (a good one this time:)
John and Amber are expecting their sweet little Bambino sometime this month...and last I heard they were hoping to name the baby Hugo Alfredo...Yes, they do know it will be a boy.
Jim and I got to visit with Fran for a couple of days on our way down to Florida and she tells me that she is hoping to come up north for a long weekend each month for awhile.
Mary and Rich are currently on vacation and will be back in another week.
Debbie is working hard on her new business Clutterbye. You will have to ask her all about it. And Michael is working hard...as usual.
Paul is working towards his goal of having his own business. Will keep you all posted as it develops.
Tish and Don went a vacation a couple of weeks ago, and Don is helping Liti and Bob sell the house.
Last I heard Jeami was trying to move to a different place in California...maybe you can update us in the comment section Jeam?
My family is all doing well...had a nice relaxing spring break (except for four days of driving :), and now the girls have set their sights on summer break. Megan is checking out colleges...how does the time fly by so quickly?
Please add any news in the comment section for us all to read. I can't possibly keep track of everyone's news...but do love hearing and sharing when something happens.
Love,
Kate

Welcome to the Cabrera Family News Blog!
Hi to all my wonderful siblings and extended family. This blog is a way for us to share information about all of our crazy family experiences without a million e-mails and phone calls. Please read it at your convenience. I will try to update often, but probably not everyday. Please feel free to share your thoughts, memories and experiences also. With all that we are experiencing right now, I just felt it was helpful to have one place that we can all go to for information. Hopefully you will all find it helpful. I am so grateful for all of you. Love, Kate
