Mama

A quick update, Mama is in the hospital today (Wednesday) after an episode yesterday. We are still waiting for a formal assessment from the doctor (Margaret is at the hospital right now with her).

The Forum called Tish Tuesday evening to tell her that they had found Mama on the floor of her room, face down in between the bed and wall. She was moaning, but otherwise unresponsive. She had them call the ambulance and send Mama to Riverside Hospital. In the emergency room last night they ran several tests to check for possible stroke, heart problem, or broken bones. All tests so far, have come back normal.

She is resting most of the time...dozing in and out. The nurse told Margaret that one of the meds Mama is on, often makes you very sleepy...maybe this is the new med that Mama just started? Mama is having difficulty swallowing, and has not been able to eat any food today. They have been giving her IV fluids. Difficulty swallowing is often a sign that the dementia has advanced to another level.

That's all I know at this point. I will let you know once we find out anymore. The meeting with hospice is definitely set for Thursday at 6pm at the Forum where Papa lives. Any siblings are welcome, but please don't feel a responsibility to be there. We will meet at the front desk and then go up to the third floor library (down the hall from Papa's old 3rd floor apartment).

Love,

Kate

Thursday 10:10 a.m.

Note from Tish: Don & I visited Mama last night (she is in a private room in the oncology dept...must have been only room available). Liti & Bob were there when we got there and we all had a really nice visit (she was especially glad to see Bob because he had a pair of eyeglasses for her. She feels lost w/out her eyeglasses). Anyway, Mama was so happy to see familiar faces. They brought the mascot dog into see her, and she got to feed the dog carrots. She kept patting the dog and smiling and crying.

Kate has filled you in on medical news. Mama is forgetting how to swallow and Mama's dementia will prevent her from being able to re-learn the ability. Just not possible. Therefore, they will be feeding her by IV or tube feedings. Not happy news.

I know Kate will be visiting hospital today, so hopefully she will have more news today. I was unable to talk to Mama's treating doctor (in hospital) last night, so hopefully Kate will touch base w/ him/her.

For all of you who will be @ Forum tonight, see you there.

Love, Tish
