Hi Cabrera's...
Lots of stuff happened while I was on vacation with my family...so here is a quick synopsis. Liti came home from Whetstone Care Center...and she sold her house! Yeah! They are now looking for a condo with a first floor master bedroom/bathroom...first floor plan. Hopefully we will have good news on that soon. Also...her wrist is healing, the swelling has gone down. The account that was set up to help Bob and Lita has had several donors...and this will help significantly as they learned that insurance will cover a wheelchair or her prosthesis, but not both.
Mama and Papa had another move. We moved Mama to the Memory Care unit which is in a different building and is specifically for dementia patients. It has gotten off to a bumpy start, she has some days that are better than others, but for the most part, she let's us all know that she is not happy in her new "home". I believe strongly though that this is the place for her though. She lives in the past a lot. Margaret has found success explaining that Papa is "at work" when Mama keeps asking where he is. She seems to like this answer, and it makes sense to her. She loves seeing familiar faces, and if you visit, please attempt to get her out of the room and into the larger sitting areas.
Papa was moved down the first floor apartment in Assisted Living (the one Mama previously had). His health has continued to go downhill. If you haven't had a chance to visit with him lately, please make every effort to go see him. The walk each day from the third floor was really taking a toll on him. He uses a walker now, and is needing a wheelchair more often. Today was an incredibly bad day for him...I know more about his medical condition on Thursday night, but it does appear that his kidneys are failing.
Margaret had a crappy job (really crappy), quit it (rightfully so...) and is now back to searching for a job (a good one this time:)
John and Amber are expecting their sweet little Bambino sometime this month...and last I heard they were hoping to name the baby Hugo Alfredo...Yes, they do know it will be a boy.
Jim and I got to visit with Fran for a couple of days on our way down to Florida and she tells me that she is hoping to come up north for a long weekend each month for awhile.
Mary and Rich are currently on vacation and will be back in another week.
Debbie is working hard on her new business Clutterbye. You will have to ask her all about it. And Michael is working hard...as usual.
Paul is working towards his goal of having his own business. Will keep you all posted as it develops.
Tish and Don went a vacation a couple of weeks ago, and Don is helping Liti and Bob sell the house.
Last I heard Jeami was trying to move to a different place in California...maybe you can update us in the comment section Jeam?
My family is all doing well...had a nice relaxing spring break (except for four days of driving :), and now the girls have set their sights on summer break. Megan is checking out colleges...how does the time fly by so quickly?
Please add any news in the comment section for us all to read. I can't possibly keep track of everyone's news...but do love hearing and sharing when something happens.
Love,
Kate

4/3/08:
Hi everyone,
Kate, Margaret, John (and Joe) and I met w/ Dr. Harris yesterday. Kate will probably be reporting about this.
We met yesterday afternoon at the Forum. Purpose: discuss our concerns about Papa's overall health and decline and to obtain Dr. Harris' perspective.
After listening to our recent observations concerning Pops, Dr. Harris examined him. He indicated that Pops' overall health is what he expected and did not seem especially alarmed. Papa was able to move from the bed to chair w/out assistance and seemed alert. He also indicated that the recent test results for Papa's kidney disease suggest an increasing decline in kidney function, but not an alarming one (note: however, he is re-running tests today. He is also having a chest x-ray done.) He also indicated that Papa's fatigue & inability to walk for more than a few steps @ a time are probaby due to his dementia, confusion and the medication he is currently taking for the dementia. When asked what he thought Papa's life expectancy would be, he indicated that he thought Papa would be with us "for months, not weeks." Finally, he indicated that he did not feel that it was time to bring hospice in.
We asked that Nancy Vishak put Papa on an "every 3 week" doctor visit list. This way, Dr. Harris will routinely see Pops every 3 weeks.
Also, John asked Dr. Harris if Mama was on Arisept which is a drug that will help delay or forestall the symptoms of Alzheimer's. Dr. Harris is a firm believer in the drug, and I believe is going to look into that.
All in all, I think we all came away more hopeful than what we felt going in to the visit.
Thanks Katie, Mags, John (and Joe) for joining me in this visit.
Love, Tish
